This sad little Will was written on the back
of part of a piece of paper which had been used by her brother Thomas, I
think to practice his handwriting. Agnes signed it herself, but the
Will is written in a different hand – not her brother Thomas, but quite
similar to her mother Agnes’s signature which appears on the Admon.

Agnes Adamthwaite
natural and lawful mother of Agnes Adamthwaite late of HallBank in the
parish of Sedbergh within the archdeaconry of Richmond, spinster,
deceased and minor sole Legatee named in the last Will and Testament of
the said Deceased appeared personally and was sworn, pursuant to the
directions of the said Will, well and truly to administer the Goods and
personal Estate of the said Deceased, and so forth, and that she
believes all the personal Effects the said Deceased … possessions of or
entitled to will not in their real value amount to the sum of one
hundred pounds. Before me W Bateman.

or to his certain attorney his Executors Administrators or assigns to
which payment well and truly to be made, We bind ourselves and each of
us our and each of our Heirs Executors and Administrators firmly by
these Presents Sealed with our Seals dated the Twenty sixth day of
December in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty.
The Condition of this
obligation is such, that if the above bounden Agnes Adamthwaite natural
and lawful mother and administratrix (with the Will annexed of the Goods
Chattles and Credits of Agnes Adamthwaite late of Hallbank in the parish
of Sedbergh aforesaid and within the Archdeaconry of Richmond, spinster,
deceased, shall and do well and faithfully administer the said goods and
personal estate of the said deceased in paying all the said Deceased’s
debts and legacys pursuant to the Directions of the last Will and
Testament of the said Deceased, so far as her Goods and personal Estate
will extend, and the Law shall bring her if also she do exhibit into
Court a true and perfect inventory of the said deceaseds goods and
personal estate and give a true and just accompt of her acting in the
premises when … she shall be thereunto lawfully called, That then this
obligation to be void or else in Force.
