Census index page

An attempt has been made to identify all the Adamthwaites in the England and Wales censuses of 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 and all available censuses in USA and Canada.  This has proved a more difficult task than you would imagine, due to the highly imaginative ways in which the name 'Adamthwaite' has been transcribed!

The tables on the linked pages show the names as transcribed by Ancestry, so if you are searching that site for any of the entries, make sure you spell the surname as it has been transcribed, errors and all. IMPORTANT NOTE: These are big files, so may take some time to download on dial-up connections, please be patient.

On all tables (except those for USA and Canada), the colour scheme adopted is an attempt to group members of each of the known branches of the Adamthwaite families together, using the following key (unshaded families have not been allocated to any branch yet - if YOU know where they belong, please let me know):

ADAMTHWAITE/HUNTER descendants from the marriage of John Adamthwaite and Margaret Hunter in 1803
ADAMTHWAITE/KEASLEY descendants from the marriage of John Adamthwaite and Isabel Keasley in 1753
ADAMTHWAITE/STEEL descendants from the marriage of John Adamthwaite and Sarah Steel in 1818
ADAMTHWAITE/WHITESMITH descendants from the marriage of William Adamthwaite and Hannah Whitesmith in 1797
ADAMTHWAITE/VIPOND descendants from the marriage of Thomas Adamthwaite and Lucy Vipond in 1790
ADAMTHWAITE/STEPHENSON descendants from the marriage of William Adamthwaite and Jane Stephenson in 1767
ADAMTHWAITE/GARLICK descendants from the marriage of John Adamthwaite and Mary Garlick in 1807
ADAMTHWAITE/McEVER descendants from the partnership of Rev William Adamthwaite and Jane McEver (~1805)
ADAMTHWAITE/KNEWSTUBB descendants from the marriage of William Adamthwaite and Mary Knewstubb in 1802

See here for more information about the colour coding system used on these pages.

We have established where some of the above branches link up (for example the orange line is a branch of the violet line and the pink line is a branch of the olive line), but aim to eventually join them all together. And if you can forward any additional Adamthwaites that you have found on any census, or correct any errors on the tables, please email me
