APRIL 2007 NEWSLETTER (circulated to members of the Adamthwaite mailing list on Rootsweb)

CENSUS PAGES

latest updates to the website include all the England and Wales census years 1841 - 1901 have now been updated with all additions and corrections you have sent in and also addresses and occupations added.  I have also put on a new page showing Adamthwaites found in US and Canadian censuses - but I know these are far from complete, so if anyone can add more information to these particular tables I would be most grateful. And does anyone have census info from Aus/NZ?

POSTING OF RESEARCH INTERESTS

Thank you to those of you who have sent in details of their individual line ... there are quite a lot of you we haven't heard from though - come on, don't be shy, tell us all who your Adamthwaite ancestors are!

THE 'ADAMTHWAITE TOUCH'

Elizabeth in NZ has sent in this wonderful extract from a letter ...

Caroline Mary Shore (daughter of Mary Adamthwaite and William Noel Shore writes (to whom? I have no idea ) regarding her granddaughters, Anne and Molly (Neligan).

"Anne is good with her needle, both plain sewing and embroidery.  I think Molly will be too, but she is a young lady with a most limited stock of patience.  There is the Adamthwaite touch there.  As a family I never knew any who had so little, especially the men.  Mother and Aunt Lucy were exceptions, especially mother.  The men were hopeless, at least Uncle Charles and John, Lupton, I never met after I was six or so.  Aunt Fanny was very impatient too, both with things and people."

How many of you recognise yourselves in that description?  (This will shortly appear on the website, along I hope with some other Adamthwaite traits)

FAMILY LINES

I think that we have now got representatives from all of the nine Adamthwaite lines we have identified, with the exception of the TURQUOISE line - descended from William Adamthwaite and Mary Knewstubb - this line seem to be the only one which never strayed from Cumbria - they were last heard of living up in Carlisle.  Is there anyone out there who belongs to this line?

MEMBERSHIP OF THE MAILING LIST

at the last count, there were 22 people subscribed to the mailing list (though not everyone posts mails - they are our 'silent members') and another 36 people who have contacted me via the website and shared information about their Adamthwaite ancestry. So in total, we are in touch with 58 Adamthwaite researchers based in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the Far East - there could be some of you in other places, too - email addresses can be pretty anonymous!!  And the website statistics are growing too - during March we had an average of 84 visitors a day.

DNA PROJECT?

Last week, I had an enquiry about the possibility of us organising an Adamthwaite DNA project - though obviously we would need more than one volunteer to make it worth while.  These projects are increasingly popular amongst one-name study groups like ours and could provide a fascinating insight into exactly how long ago the different lines we have identified were joined up together.  If there are any other male members of the mailing list who are direct Adamthwaite descendents (i.e. still carry the Adamthwaite surname and do not know of any adoptions along the way) let me know and I will see if I can find a way of obtaining funding for the cost of the tests and analysis of the results. It is generally recommended that two distant members from each major line should be tested to gain a true picture, and the current cost for a 37 marker test which is part of a group project with a reputable company is around £130, but prices are coming down all the time. We could always apply for lottery funding or something!
